Economic power

In 2007, Central Hesse’s economic power GDP (Gross Domestic Product) was EUR 27,386 per inhabitant (2005: 25,055 and 2003: 22,844 EUR per inhabitant). Statistically, the gross domestic product has increased steadily over the past several years.

Employment

According to 2007 statistics, the majority of employees in Central Hesse work in the service sector. Some 325,700 (68.7 %) of a total of 474,300 persons in employment are active in this sector, while approx. 139,400 persons work in the production industry (29.4 %). A further 1.9 % work in the agriculture and forestry sectors.

Unemployment

In 2007, Central Hesse’s unemployment rate was at 8.8 % (based on the working population). In comparison, the national employment rate was at 10.1 %.

Central Hesse's workforce potential

Number of students 2008/2009: 51,817

Number of graduates in 2008: 7,340

58,4 % of all graduates receive diplomas in medicine, pharmaceutics, business sciences, engineering, process engineering, mathematics, computer sciences, physics and biology.
